Intertextual reference

Image
My intertextual reference is the use of the fish-eye lens in the first half of the video. This references the style of music video cinematography pioneered by Hype Williams which is the use of a fish-eye lens to get up close to the artist and distort the image due to the extreme wide angle capabilities of the lens. It therefore allows the camera to be close up yet still include the surroundings in the shot. The most well known videos produced by Hype Williams that include this style are "Woo-Hah" and "Gimme some more" by Busta Rhymes as well as songs by Wu Tang and Notorious B.I.G.  Many other music video directors have since used and referenced this style in countless videos which led to it being a common trope of Hip Hop music videos today such as "HUMBLE" by Kendrick Lamar which is an award winning video.  This style of filming is also seen in the film "Jackass" and is very common in extreme sports videos since the 1990's which i...

reflection on first draft

My first draft had the overall same idea and clips used however after reflection I decided to remove any of the low quality clips as some were shot in poor lighting on a phone and replace them with clips shot on a high resolution camera. This improved the production quality of the video as a whole and allowed me to change the content of some the clips to make the narrative more seamless. I also restructured the order of the clips so that there are two clear halves of the video to show the difference in representation of the two groups as originally it was not very clear that there were two separate groups of youth. To add to the distinction of the two areas of representation i made sure that there were no fish-eye lens clips in the mainstream section of the video as the change in cinematography is very effective in separating the two.  I also added more visual effects such as increasing the brightness and contrast of the clips to emphasize the good summer weather as this allowed i...

Statement of intent

My video is going to show the lifestyles of youth during the summer and how they can differ. The two areas of representation are going to be mainstream and alternative youth culture, and this will be shown by their choice of activities, clothes and behaviour. The alternative people will be shown skateboarding as this is a widely known counter-culture that will be very visually pleasing and will fit well with music if the tricks are done in time with the beat. The mainstream youth will be seen going to concerts, day trips to cities, beaches and going out as these are all very common activities. The Mise-en-scene will also change in terms of the clothes the characters wear according to their group; the skateboarders will be wearing more streetwear styled clothing whereas the mainstream characters will be wearing more generic popular clothes in order to conform to cultural and social stereotypes. The song I will be using is Gold Dust – Shy-FX as it is happy and up-beat sounding and has ...

Things to include in my website to conform

1. artist name/logo 2. menu bar with various links to tour dates, tickets and other content 3. news about the artists latest work 4. upcoming events and work 5. both images and videos of the artist 6. links to social media 7. bright colours to match the dance genre

Analysis of Band websites

Monstercat is a record label for a dance music artists and was voted the best dance label of 2017 at The dance music awards. The home page has a mainly black and white colour palette which matches the colours in the album art work displayed on the page. This creates synergy between the two which make the two pieces digitally convergent. The font in the menu bar is very basic in order to create a clean and professional aestehtic; this also better presents the artists albums by making their more colourful fonts stand out more. The logo is next to the company name in the the top left corner and stands out against the white background however is relatively small compared to the other contents of the page. This puts more emphasis on the artists work in an effort to represent them better. When you click on a certain artists page the background fill with their picture to give the viewer a better idea of the who the artists is which strengthens the relationship between the target audience and...

My perfect audience member

My perfect audience member is somewhere between Mainstream and urban but not exclusively. The genre of the song is dance, and more specifically, jump up drum and bass which has become very mainstream in many areas of youth culture. The video will depict very typical activities for young people such as parties, festivals and just hanging out having a good time which emphasizes the idea of living for the weekend. This person will be all about having the best time they can while they still can. They will most likely wear fashionable mainstream clothes but also the video will include slightly more alternative street wear which will attract more "alt" groups such as skaters.

Key elements to include in the video

Cinematography Establishing shots at the beginning to set the scene/mood establishing shots often include panning shots from a high angle long shot but not always Medium and close up shots for the majority of the video to show detail and expression The lighting depends on the type dance song, as my choice is not really a club song and has a strong reggae influence the lighting will be bright and sunny and filmed mainly outside in the summer. Sound The song. No diegetic sound included. Editing At the start of the song the tempo is much slower which allows for longer cut rates on the establishing shots. Once the beat kicks in the tempo increases and so will the cut rate to match. After effects can be included during editing to change the colour palette which alters the look of the video. Fade transitions will be used in certain parts of the song to emphasize the relaxed reggae vibe. effects such as layering translucent shots onto one another can increase the complexity ...

Three other videos by Shy FX

Who Knows feat. Chronixx - Shy FX remix This video is one of my favorite Shy FX videos because of the relaxed vibe it gives because of its use slow motion and a mixture of quick and slower paced cutting rates. The video is set in what appears to be Jamaica which allows the video to include many beautiful shots of the landscapes which only adds to the feel of the song. The fading transitions at the start of the video are very effective because at that point the song is much slower which creates a relaxed mood during the establishing shots. It is also very similar to how I want the start of my video to look because the song i have chosen is also slow and chilled at the start with strong reggae influences. Original Nuttah - Shy FX & UK Apachi The use of a fish eye camera lens in this video is very appealing to me as it allows the filmer to get very close to the artists and still get a lot of other mise-en-scene in the shot. It also creates a low budget, rough aesthetic whi...

Gold Dust - Shy FX Re-edit

I have chosen this track as it 3 mins 2 seconds long which is perfect and it also fits very well into the dance genre. The track has points where the tempo changes and the overall feel of the song fluctuates which as a director provides me with more room to play with ideas for shots. The start of the song is very relaxed with a mellow summer vibe which works very well for establishing shots before the main action of the video begins. After this section the beat and bass kick in and the tempo increases so I can increase the cut rate to match which is a key part of any dance video. I also personally like the song which is important as i will be listening to it a lot during the production of this video.

10 frame analysis

Image
10 frame analysis The first frame is an establishing shot of the main characters house. The mis en scene shows a one story suburban American house with a silver car in the center of the shot. This shot is used to represent the typical middle class working house hold of many Americans. It is also used to contrast the second frame which exaggerates the themes within each one. This frame is the opposite end of the spectrum to the last one, it shows the very upper class house of a wealthy family and an expensive car outside. The weather is also much sunnier in this shot compared to the first one which is more gloomy and dark. This has the effect of amplifying the attractiveness of the house in the second fame. This shot is also an establishing shot to set the scene and give the viewer an understanding of the type of lifestyle the character has. The next frame shows the inside of the first house which is the characters bedroom. The mis en scene is made up of normal items any kid ...

Minecraft: Institutions and Audiences

Image
When Minecraft was first created it was made by a small independent company called "Mojang" which meant the game had a very low budget and no marketing plans at all. This meant that the game was spread by word of mouth between small gaming communities which is very unusual for such a successful game. Minecraft is unlike many other games due to its endless possibilities and lack of any story which allows the gamer to do virtually anything they want. Another unique part of the game is that is a building/crafting game which is a genre that has never reached anywhere near the level of success that Minecraft has and when Jens Bergensten was asked why he thinks this is, he replied;   “It’s the way that you build in the first-person perspective, and you only interact with one block at a time. It’s also very open-ended. It doesn’t tell you what to build.”   However in September 2014 Microsoft bought Mojang for £2.5 billion which shocked the whole gaming community because the whole id...

Producing a music video

Image
So when I was first tasked with producing and making my own music video to a pre-existing song, my initial thought was to look for inspiration in order to collect ideas. I searched through different music genres, artists and songs until I remembered a Nike advert I once watched which I particularly enjoyed. The song in the advert was Ice Cube's "Today was a good day" and the video consisted of my favorite skateboarder cursing through the streets of Los Angeles, meeting up with friends and landing some very difficult tricks. I decided that I could use some of the same ideas in my video considering that is basically my day to day life anyway, so I set about creating a story board and planning with friends how we would shoot each angle and skateboard trick. So the filming day came and we started skating, we had multiple cameras filming at all times through the evening, collecting different shots of skating and just general B-roll of all of us. We used a gimbal to s...
