Intertextual reference

Image
My intertextual reference is the use of the fish-eye lens in the first half of the video. This references the style of music video cinematography pioneered by Hype Williams which is the use of a fish-eye lens to get up close to the artist and distort the image due to the extreme wide angle capabilities of the lens. It therefore allows the camera to be close up yet still include the surroundings in the shot. The most well known videos produced by Hype Williams that include this style are "Woo-Hah" and "Gimme some more" by Busta Rhymes as well as songs by Wu Tang and Notorious B.I.G.  Many other music video directors have since used and referenced this style in countless videos which led to it being a common trope of Hip Hop music videos today such as "HUMBLE" by Kendrick Lamar which is an award winning video.  This style of filming is also seen in the film "Jackass" and is very common in extreme sports videos since the 1990's which i...

reflection on first draft

My first draft had the overall same idea and clips used however after reflection I decided to remove any of the low quality clips as some were shot in poor lighting on a phone and replace them with clips shot on a high resolution camera. This improved the production quality of the video as a whole and allowed me to change the content of some the clips to make the narrative more seamless. I also restructured the order of the clips so that there are two clear halves of the video to show the difference in representation of the two groups as originally it was not very clear that there were two separate groups of youth. To add to the distinction of the two areas of representation i made sure that there were no fish-eye lens clips in the mainstream section of the video as the change in cinematography is very effective in separating the two.  I also added more visual effects such as increasing the brightness and contrast of the clips to emphasize the good summer weather as this allowed i...

Statement of intent

My video is going to show the lifestyles of youth during the summer and how they can differ. The two areas of representation are going to be mainstream and alternative youth culture, and this will be shown by their choice of activities, clothes and behaviour. The alternative people will be shown skateboarding as this is a widely known counter-culture that will be very visually pleasing and will fit well with music if the tricks are done in time with the beat. The mainstream youth will be seen going to concerts, day trips to cities, beaches and going out as these are all very common activities. The Mise-en-scene will also change in terms of the clothes the characters wear according to their group; the skateboarders will be wearing more streetwear styled clothing whereas the mainstream characters will be wearing more generic popular clothes in order to conform to cultural and social stereotypes. The song I will be using is Gold Dust – Shy-FX as it is happy and up-beat sounding and has ...
